There are so many different concerns here and so many ways to respond, that our committee has decided to post only about one a week to make these actions more manageable. Please comment if you have done this action. This will help us know how we are doing, and will encourage others to follow your lead!

Here is the first one:

Write, email and/or call your members of Congress (moc) to protest the cutting of the OVERALL budget to the EPA.

SAMPLE PHONE SCRIPT (YOUR MOC):
My name is _____. I’m a constituent of moc. My home address is _____ and my email address is _____. I want to hear back from _____ regarding his
position on my comments today. ( If staffer says it might not happen, remind them that this is the forum that your moc chose for town hall meetings and you expect a response!)
Comment:
I’m calling today because I’m alarmed at the massive cuts to the budget of the EPA!
The EPA must be properly funded and staffed to ensure that the Agency will continue to fulfill its role as the protector of human health and the environment.
I want to ensure that sound science is the basis for decisions about environmental protection.
I want the EPA to continue to be able to protect the environment so future generations of Americans do not inherit a polluted country and planet that threatens their health and survival.
(Insert here your specific grievance(s) but say it’s only one of many that you’re are concerned about!) ex.
Is representative _____ aware that funding for the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay, our country’s largest estuary, is being cut from $73 million to $5 million, which is a reduction of 93% ! If money is his/her only concern, what about the effects these devastating cuts will have on the state of Virginia’s economy! We have seafood, recreation and tourism to consider when considering the budget for keeping the Chesapeake Bay clean.
Will Representative/Senator _____ commit to protecting the EPA? I want to hear back from Representative/Senator _____ about where he stands on fully funding the EPA.
Thank you.

SAMPLE LETTER SCRIPT: (Feel free to use entirely or cut and paste. It’s best to make your letter slightly different)
Representative _____,
Please stop this ill advised attack on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The White House is proposing to slash a quarter of the EPA’s budget,
targeting climate-change programs and those designed to prevent air and
water pollution like lead contamination. President Trump’s planned cuts
to the EPA would slash its workforce by almost 3,000 employees and its
budget by $2 billion.
The EPA must be properly funded and staffed to ensure that the agency
will continue to fulfill its role as the protector of human health and
the environment. I want to ensure that sound science is the basis for
decisions about environmental protection.
I want to ensure that the EPA continues to be able to protect the
environment so future generations of Americans do not inherit a polluted
country and planet that threatens their health and survival.
It is irresponsible and dangerous to the health of Americans to cut
funding for the brownfields industrial site cleanup program by 42
percent to $14.7 million!
It is irresponsible and dangerous to the health of Americans to reduce
funding for enforcing pollution laws by 11 percent to $153 million!
It is irresponsible and dangerous to the health of Americans to cut the
budget which protects citizens living and visiting our beaches by
cutting or eliminating beach water quality testing.
It is irresponsible and dangerous to the health of Americans to cut the
budget which protects citizens from diesel emissions, protection which
has been responsible for almost all progress in addressing
cancer-causing diesel soot, a major air pollution source.
It is irresponsible and dangerous to the health of Americans to cut the
budget for protecting the Chesapeake Bay. Funding for the restoration of
the Chesapeake Bay, our country’s largest estuary, is being cut from $73
million to $5 million, which is a reduction in funding of 93% If money
is your only concern, what about the effects these devastating cuts will
have on the state of Virginia’s economy! We have seafood, recreation and
tourism to consider when considering the budget for keeping the
Chesapeake Bay clean.
It is irresponsible and dangerous to the health of Americans to cut the
budget of protecting the Puget Sound. Funding for restoration work in
the country’s second-largest estuary would be cut from $28 million to $2
million.
It is irresponsible and dangerous to the health of Americans to cut the
budget of protecting The Great Lakes. Funding to combat algae blooms,
invasive species and other water pollution problems in the world’s
largest group of freshwater lakes would be cut from $300 million to $10
million. Nothing is more important than fresh water.
It is irresponsible and dangerous to the health of Americans to cut the
budget of
the EPA climate protection program on cutting emissions of greenhouse
gases! Methane contributes to global warming and this budget cuts the
program by 70 percent to $29 million! Methane is more harmful to our
atmosphere and global warming than carbon! This is a scientific fact!
It is irresponsible and dangerous to the health of Americans to cut the
budget of environmental education. The EPA spends $8.7 million annually
on programs to educate children, but under this budget it would be cut
to $555,000. Shall we send our children into the future ignorant of the
pollution all around them or without the mindset to keep it clean? Do
you have children?
It is irresponsible and dangerous to the health of Americans to cut the
budget of
research on endocrine disruptors. The EPA’s work studying chemicals that
can interfere with the body’s reproductive and developmental systems is
nearly being eliminated, dropping from $7.5 million to $445,000. This is
shameful!
I want to know if the 2018 proposal to cut the EPA’s overall budget by
25 percent to $6.1 billion and staffing by 20 percent to 12,400 is part
of a broader effort to fund increased military spending? Increased
military funding that I do not agree with!
President Trump’s EPA budget cuts deeply into programs like climate
protection, environmental justice and enforcement. As a citizen,
tax-payer and voter, I demand that the EPA be properly funded and
staffed to at least FY2016 funding levels.
Will you commit to protecting the EPA? I want to hear back as to where
you stand on fully funding the EPA.
Since you have chosen only to communicate with me through emails and
phone calls instead of attending a public town hall meeting, I expect to
hear back from you with comments on each point I have raised in this
letter.
Sincerely,
*****
Let’s save the EPA. Write emails and call today!
